About Cerner Corporation:

Cerner Corporation (Cerner) is a $5+ bn supplier of healthcare information technology. Cerner offers a range of intelligent solutions and services that support the clinical, financial and operational needs of organizations of all sizes.

About Bergmann Group:

Bergmann Group (Bergmann) is a design & manufacturing company based in Phoenix, Arizona that manufactures products for the healthcare industry under several different brands including Waterloo Healthcare and Phoenix Long Term Care. Bergmann also manufactures custom products for OEM customers in the healthcare industry.

The Need:

One of the hardware products that Cerner offers is the RxStation Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinet, which provides a single formulary across a health system to help nurses and pharmacists safely and efficiently manage medication dispensing and administration. Cerner was looking for an existing product that could be modified to fit its specific needs: They wanted to offer similar medication dispensing and administration inside of an operating room via a mobile platform. They had a definitive timeline and budget, and considered an expansive list of available products on the market before selecting Waterloo Healthcare, one of Bergmann’s companies, as the best candidate for their needs.

The Results:

After successful collaboration, prototyping, and testing between Cerner and Bergmann’s  development teams, the RxStation Anesthesia Cart became generally available in 2017.  This product is a modified version of the Phoenix LTC “StatSafe” product, but utilizes Cerner’s  advanced technology to control access to the Anesthesia Cart drawers and bins while fully integrating with Cerner’s core product line.

About Medline Industries:
Medline is the largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies uniquely positioned to provide products, education and support across the continuum of care.

Bergmann Group also manufactures custom products for OEM customers in the healthcare industry.

The Need:
Medline Industries had worked with an industrial design firm to develop a smaller isolation product dispensing station than others that were available in the marketplace. Medline had worked with a custom wood-based products manufacturer to produce initial prototypes of this cart. Shortly after deploying these test units in the field, Medline found that this wood cart was not going to stand up long-term in a hospital environment.

The Results:
Medline contacted Bergmann Group to discuss re-engineering this product from lightweight aluminum rather than wood. Bergmann Group worked with Medline and produced several variations of this isolation product dispenser. The final product was a visually appealing cart made from aluminum and acrylic but included a wood-like vinyl wrap over portions of the product. Medline has experienced great success with this product in the competitive marketplace of isolation product dispensing.

About Design Concepts: Design Concepts is a full-service product design and strategic innovation consultancy with offices in Madison, WI and San Francisco, CA that has been in the design business since the 1960’s.

The Need: Design Concepts was hired by Mizuho OSI®, a leading manufacturer of specialty surgical tables, pressure management solutions, and table specific patient care kits, to build a custom cart. The company needed the cart for their newest product the Levo™, a modular head positioning system for all spine procedures. The cart required purpose-built drawers to hold the system that included laser cut acrylic drawer inserts and pre-wiring of the electronics within the unit. Prototypes of this cart had to be completed in three weeks to meet a testing deadline Mizuho OSI had in place.

The Results: Design Concepts contacted Waterloo Healthcare to create a custom cart for Mizuho OSI. After the successful collaboration, prototyping, and testing between Design Concepts and the Waterloo Healthcare development teams, the cart, with its easy and ergonomic access, became the standard for Mizuho OSI to carry their newest product. Mizuho OSI now purchases these carts on an on-going basis from Waterloo Healthcare.
